Server Room Power Issues
With chilly weather now here, aware of some key items which will help you avoid problems:
Re-check all user desktops to ensure that they are on battery backup and NOT just surge suppressor. All battery backup units have labelled surge and battery-protected outlets. The computer and displays must be on the battery-protected outlets.
Ensure that if a user has a space heater that it is NEVER connected to a battery backup…heaters should only ever be connected directly to an outlet, observing manufacturer safety precautions.
Avoid ever having a heater near a computer chassis…the hot, dry air can result in either thermal damage or static discharge damage to the computer. And be aware of the temps in your server room or server closet…be sure that area remains cool, and is NOT heated by your HVAC system. It may take a separate fan and closing air discharge vents.
Taking these simple steps will save hassles later on…proper protection of your hardware will allow your investment to last much longer. Paying to replace workstations due to power and heat issues sucks, so don’t do it!
